Gambling Commission Executive level changes help put consumers at heart of regulation Changes have been made to the portfolios and accountabilities of senior management in the Gambling Commission. These are shown in a new organisational chart – ‘Who’s who at the Gambling Commission’.

The key changes are designed to:

  • give greater emphasis to the role that the Gambling Commission plays to promote and protect consumers’ interests in both commercial gambling markets and the National Lottery
  • ensure sufficient focus on analysis and evidence. The Gambling Commission is an evidence-led regulator. We produce regular public data on industry trends and consumer participation. This helps shape policy on gambling in Britain, as well as informing regulatory decisions
  • look to market, technology and consumer developments, for example the increasingly digital and mobile-led dimension to the National Lottery and commercial gambling, and take account of these changes in future regulatory approaches.
  • maintain a strong focus on effective engagement with industry sectors; on shared regulation with local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales, and, in an international gambling market, on partnerships with regulators in other jurisdictions.
  • build on the Commission’s expertise, its ways of working and communications to ensure regulation is effective and efficient for the future.

The changes in portfolios take effect from 1 April 2016.

In April, the Commission will also publish its business and financial plan for 2016/17. This will set out the key programmes, projects and deliverables for the coming year.

Later in the financial year, a process will begin to develop a new forward strategy for the Gambling Commission.

The Gambling Commission has published the industry statistics for the period 1 April 2010 to 30 September 2014 (although the figures provided for October 2013 to September 2014 are provisional at this stage).  During the period October 2013 and September 2014 the British gambling industry, as regulated by the Commission, generated a gross gambling yield (GGY) of over £7.1bn, a rise of £327m (5%) compared to the period April 2013 to March 2014.

Growth, compared to the previous year, was greatest in the remote betting, bingo and casino sector (up £213m or 19%), in the non-remote casino sector (up £43m or 4%) and in the large society lotteries sector (up £29m or 10%). The non-remote betting sector also experienced a growth of £57m, representing a 2% increase on the previous year.
